The Foothills Honor Roll (otherwise known as the Chicken Pin award) is our district's way of recognizing units that go above and beyond the national Quality Unit requirements.  By completing the Honor Roll requirements by the end of 2009, your unit leaders will be eligibible to wear the coveted Chicken Pin, which is awarded each year at our Annual Awards Banquet.

The 9.5 oz. Caramel Corn with Peanuts popcorn is being voluntarily recalled by the manufacturer, since the nuts came from Peanut Corporation of America. No complaints or illnesses have been reported, but the manufacturer is doing a precautionary recall of the Caramel Corn with dates from January 2008-July 2009. Please see attached for more information. Consumers with an unopened, sealed popcorn foil bag can arrange for a refund by calling 1-800-782-4255 or by sending an email to ccp@trails-end.com.

Our goal was $412,000, so we went $21,001 over goal.

A special thank you to the Unit Kernels and all the Scout Families that participated in the 2008 Popcorn fundraiser.

A total of 51 units participated in the popcorn fundraiser.

BSA's policy is to provide a quality character development program for as many youth as possible. Foothills District has created a new committee to provide support to Foothills Scouters and Units on issues related to serving Scouts with special needs.

Our initial plans are to provide materials for Roundtable on Special Needs Scouting, support for advancement committees on possible accommodations and alternative requirements, and training for Scouters. We are planning to have a day-long training on Special Needs Scouting either in the late winter or early spring.

The 8th Annual LMLA and Lockheed Martin Aviation Merit Badge Clinic is proudly being offered on October 4th, 2008.

Congratulations and Thank You to the many individuals, families and businesses who helped the Foothills District exceed our 2008 Friends of Scouting Goal.  We received $188,006 in pledges, representing 101.6% our $185,000 goal.  This contributed to the Atlanta Area Council also exceeding its Friends of Scouting goal for the year, coming in at 101.8% council-wide.

Three High Adventure programs, exclusively for members of the Order of the Arrow, will be available in 2009.  Programs will be at Philmont, Northern Tier and Sea Base. These programs are an excellent opportunity for young arrowmen to experience the three bases and the premier programs at the three bases (and for a very good price).

These programs have a limited number of slots, which will be filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, so if you are interested it is important that you begin the application process as soon as possible.

The centerpiece of the National celebration of the first century of Scouting will be the 2010 National Scout Jamboree. Over 40,000 Scouts and Scouters from across the Nation and around the world will come together for a two week celebration of Scouting. The activities will be practically endless. We are saddened by the passing of longtime Cobb County Scouter Bill Barber, who passed away Thursday, April 24, 2008. Bill was a lifelong member of the Boy Scouts, and a was a fixture for many years in the Colossal Cobb and Foothills District. Bill was admired by all who knew him, and he leaves behind many, many friends in the Scouting community.

The Atlanta Area Council needs volunteers to help with several maintenance and improvement projects along with general cleanup at each of our camps. These special workdays are an excellent opportunity to do a good turn for the camp and to enjoy fellowship with other Scouters. Please plan on joining the team!
